CT Scan
What is it?
A CT scan (Computed Axial Tomography) is a 360-degree X-ray that produces pictures of a cross-section of the body. The procedure is common, safe and relatively painless.
What are the general procedures for a CT Scan?
You will be asked to remove all jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, dentures and any metal material before entering the room. You will be asked to put on a smock and lie down on a special table. The technologist will secure you to the table, and then you will be moved into the scanner. You will hear a whirring sound as you are being scanned. During the scanning, you must remain completely still. After the scans are complete, you will be moved out of the scanner.
Preparation
If a contrast dye is needed for the CT scan, you may be asked to avoid foods or fluids 4-8 hours before the test. This contrast makes it easier to view certain parts of the body.
The technologist will need to know if there is any possibility you are pregnant or if you are nursing.

CT Scan: abdomen and pelvis with contrast
Offered at Baptist, Doctors, South Miami and Homestead Hospitals, Baptist Outpatient Center, and Baptist Medical Plazas at Doral, Miami Lakes, Palmetto Bay, Tamiami Trail and Westchester.
What is it?
Your physician has ordered a CT scan of your abdomen and pelvis with contrast. This scan will help your physician in the assessment of cancers, masses, hernias and ascites (fluid in the peritoneal cavity). Different techniques are available depending upon your diagnosis, clinical history and physical condition.
For the intravenous injection, you will be given an informed consent form. The procedure will be explained to you at that time and any questions you might have will be answered. Please tell the technologist all pertinent information, including all medications.
You will be escorted to the CT scanning room, where you will lie on a table. The machine will move you into a large cylinder, which is open on both sides. The injection will be started and the cylinder will begin to move around your body at a 360-degree angle. The injection may give a warm sensation as it is going in; this is normal and will pass within 30 seconds. You will be asked to hold your breath at different intervals during the scan. The whole procedure will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
Please contact your physician within 7-10 days for the results.
Preparation
Please pick up two bottles of barium at any Baptist facility at which the scan is performed. The barium may be refrigerated. Please follow the general instructions for a CT scan.
If you are allergic to iodine or have asthma, please inform the technologist.
If you are taking Glucophage and/or Glucovance, you will be asked to refrain from taking this medication for 48 hours after the scan is completed. Please check with your physician. All other medications may be taken with a sip of water.
If you are allergic to iodine, your doctor must prescribe Medrol.
- 32 mg 12 hours prior to exam
- 32 mg 2 hours prior to exam
The technologist will need to know if there is any possibility you are pregnant or if you are nursing.
