Doctors Hospital has completed installation of a new MRI scanner that offers patients higher-quality, faster and more efficient diagnostic images.
“The new MRI symbolizes a new era of magnetic resonance image quality and efficiency that will let us obtain high-resolution orthopedic, neurological and full-body images,” said Michael Thorpe, M.D., medical director of radiology at Doctors Hospital. “This will let doctors diagnose and treat patients in a more timely and comfortable manner.”
The new technology is quieter, no longer making the loud banging noises of traditional MRI units. It also takes scans more quickly, which means less time for patients. The new scanner will reduce the average scan time from 35 to 25 minutes. Patients enter the scanner feet first, which reduces anxiety for those who are uncomfortable in small spaces.
“In addition to those significant benefits, this state-of-the-art scanner will let us expand our capabilities in other areas such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and cardiology,” said Director of Radiology Tony Blanco.
In 2003, Doctors Hospital became a part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region. Since then, Doctors Hospital has upgraded clinical and non-clinical equipment in the operating room, radiology, laboratory and patient care areas and has hired additional nurses and other staff members.
Baptist Health is expected to invest $20 million over the next five years to bring new and enhanced services and technology to the 56-year-old hospital. The new MRI scanner represents a $2.5 million investment, including renovations in the MRI Department.
Baptist Health also includes Baptist Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital, South Miami Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital in the Upper Keys, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Baptist Outpatient Services.
