Twice this year, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has visited Mariners Hospital. And twice, Mariners passed an intensive inspection by JCAHO, which holds hospitals and other medical facilities to the highest standards in the industry.
The first visit came earlier this year, when the hospital underwent a four-day, on-site inspection. The more recent visit brought JCAHO to the hospital’s main laboratory and blood gas laboratory.
In the main lab, technologists analyze blood cells and other types of body specimens to aid in patient diagnoses. The blood gas lab measures the oxygen and carbon monoxide in a patient’s blood, which is one indication of how well the patient’s lungs are functioning. Hospitals use the Joint Commission accreditation as a benchmark to insure they are meeting the most stringent quality healthcare standards.
“The scores we achieved in this most recent inspection were absolutely phenomenal,” said Nelson Lazo, Mariners CEO. “This accomplishment reflects the drive for perfection at Mariners. Everyone in the hospital, whether they come in direct contact with patients or work behind the scenes, such as in the main lab or the blood gas lab, give their absolute best every day to care for Mariners patients.”
