Mariners Hospital Imaging Services recently received a three-year accreditation for ultrasound services from the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation is awarded to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards following a stringent peer-review evaluation. Board-certified physicians and medical physicists, who are experts in the field, conduct the evaluations.
“To receive accreditation, we had to demonstrate that we follow the highest standards when our technologists perform an ultrasound,” said Fran Glick, director of imaging services. “Ultrasound accreditation is not required by ACR. However, at Baptist Health we know that we maintain and exceed the standards set forth by ACR, and getting the accreditation proves that. I’m very proud of our ultrasound technologists.”
Mariners Hospital’s ultrasound team includes imaging technologists Karen Anderson, Joan Baker and Wendy Woodwell.
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues and many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female pelvis, kidneys and the vascular system. The information gathered during an ultrasound can be used to assess blood flow through various vessels. Ultrasounds also are performed to evaluate fetal development during pregnancy.
In addition to the recent accreditation, Imaging Services is accredited by ACR in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digital mammography.
Other imaging services offered by Mariners Hospital include computed tomography (CT) scan, nuclear medicine, bone density for osteoporosis and X-ray. The results of all patient imaging tests, along with related data including the radiologist’s report, annotations and analysis, are stored and viewed electronically.
Mariners Hospital is a part of Baptist Health, the largest not-for-profit healthcare organization in South Florida. Baptist Health also includes Baptist Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital, South Miami Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Baptist Outpatient Services. |
