Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables is the first hospital in Miami-Dade County to have acquired the MAKO Haptic Guidance System ™ (HGS™) to perform MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing surgery. This surgeon-interactive robotic technology allows Doctors Hospital orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Levitt treat early to mid-stage osteoarthritis knee disease through a keyhole incision.
“The MAKO Haptic Guidance System is breakthrough technology compared to the instrumentation previously used in partial knee replacement procedures,” said Dr. Levitt. “It allows me to ensure the precise resection and the exact alignment of an implant, all through a keyhole incision. This results in better outcomes for my patients, as well as less scarring, reduced soft tissue damage and a rapid recovery.”
The MAKO HGS™ allows surgeons and hospitals to address the needs of the large and growing population, yet currently underserved population of baby boomers suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. This technology allows surgeons to perform the minimally-invasive, keyhole, procedure called MAKOplasty®, which may provide numerous patient benefits, including reduced pain, improved surgical outcomes, minimal hospitalization and the restoration of an active lifestyle.
“MAKOplasty allows me to treat patients at an earlier point in their degenerative joint disease of the knee, thus reducing the chronic pain and lifestyle impairment many baby boomers are currently experiencing,” said Dr. Levitt.
Most patients’ hospital stay is decreased with less need for intense physical therapy following surgery. Most patients are able to go home from the hospital within 24 hours and can return to normal daily activities within a week.
