Teresa Iribarren, M.D., an adolescent and bariatric medicine physician with Baptist Health, will be a keynote speaker at the Bank of the Bahamas Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Cable Beach in Nassau, Bahamas.

The Health Fair has been organized by the Bank of the Bahamas on this day, Caribbean Wellness Day, to enable the cardholders and potential cardholders of their newly launched medical procedure credit card to meet various healthcare providers from South Florida. Dr. Iribarren will address preventive measures to combat non-communicable diseases in her lecture, and blood pressure and blood sugar level tests will be conducted at the Baptist Health booth.

Caribbean Wellness Day was created by the Caribbean Government to declare war against non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, which cause more than 50% of the deaths in the Caribbean.

Dr. Iribarren will present “Know Your Numbers,” a lecture that embraces the slogan of this day, “Love That Body,” and encourages citizens to take responsibility for their health and get regular screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, as well as having their body mass index and waist circumference checked. Dr. Iribarren will educate attendees on the meaning of their health screening numbers and will also discuss modifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, which are the leading causes of most non-communicable diseases.

“I am excited about educating and empowering patients to prevent these controllable diseases,” Dr. Iribarren said. “My goal is to prevent the long-term complications of these diseases by teaching people that they are in control of their bodies.”

Dr. Iribarren has been a physician for 20 years and takes a holistic approach to patient care. She educates her patients on disease prevention and reducing risk factors of non-communicable diseases through lectures, radio interviews and television shows.
