Proper prenatal care provides a healthy start and is essential to the entire process of human development.

Healthy Beginnings is a very special series of programs offered to expectant parents by Baptist Hospital. Shared preparation for your baby's arrival adds to your understanding of pregnancy, the birth process and the transition to parenthood. It also enhances the experience for families in the childbearing year. That's why Baptist Hospital offers a continuous series of programs for parents-to-be...to help make this time of your life very special.

Baptist Hospital Lactation Services Department Awarded The IBCLC Care Award

The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLCE) have awarded the Baptist Hospital Lactation Services Department the IBCLC Care Award!  This award is given to facilities that hire International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), has a dedicated lactation program and an initiative that protects, promotes and supports breastfeeding and provides breastfeeding training to staff.

 

Registration
To register for a class, call 786-596-8748, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m-1 p.m. Please leave a message on the telephone recorder during other hours. You may also register for childbirth classes online or e-mail us at baptistchildbirth@baptisthealth.net.  You will receive a confirmation within 72 hours after sending your registration in. Call early (as soon as you know you are pregnant) to reserve a place in class, as enrollment is accepted on a space-available basis. Payment of fee will hold your space. Credit card payments can be made over the phone.

Early sign up highly encouraged.  Class registrations close two weeks prior to start date.  Those who have not pre-paid may be removed from the roster unless other arrangements have been made.  This allows us to accommodate those who may be on a waiting list.  Please be sure to call and make payment one week prior to class start date.  Due to the high attendance in these classes we are unable to call you for payment.  Policy prohibits us from taking payments at the door.

Note: Refunds will be made (less a $10 processing fee) for cancellations received up to five days prior to the class. Instructors are registered nurses who are certified childbirth educators. Fees are effective through December 2012. All classes are held at Baptist Hospital of Miami, unless otherwise indicated.

We reserve the right to cancel classes at anytime. You will be notified of the cancellation one week prior to the class start-date.

Our childbirth classes encourage you to be an active participant in the birth process.  Through open discussions & video presentations, we'll discuss the different stages of labor & what they feel like, birth & pain management options, & what will happen before, during & after delivery.

ELearning Childbirth Class, $80
Imagine taking a childbirth class in the comfort of your own home!  Baptist Hospital is offering a new and exciting online childbirth education program.  It is perfect for couples with time or scheduling conflicts, in need of a refresher course or for moms who are on bed rest.  Our interactive tutorial will walk you through the three stages of labor and provide you with birth and pain management options as well as comfort measures to optimize the birthing experience.  As you go through the course there are numerous video segments and illustrations that will aid in your understanding of what to expect before, during and after labor.  To view a demo of the class, please click here.

Infant Massage
4 sessions, Tuesdays, 10:00 am - 11:30 am. $50. 
Nurturing touch can relax & calm fussy babies, help them sleep better and encourages bonding between parent and child.

Breastfeeding Class
1 session, 3 hours; $50
When to take the class: 5-7 months of pregnancy
Congratulations on choosing to breastfeed! This class provides education and support for women who want to know more about breast-feeding their babies. Husbands and support persons are encouraged to attend. This class is taught by a certified Lactation Consultant.

Breastfeeding for Working Moms

1 session, 2 hours, 10am-12pm; $30. When to take the class: 4-6 weeks prior to your expected date of going back to work.
Congratulations on your decision to continue breastfeeding! This class will provide practical tips on how to continue feeding your baby & make for an easy transition once you are ready to go back to work.  Discussions will focus on what pump to use, when to pump, storing and handling of your milk and much more.   This class is taught by a certified lactation consultant.

Newborn Parenting 
1 session, 3 hours; $50;
When to take the class: 5-7 months of pregnancy
Why is my baby crying? Caring for a newborn can be an exciting yet anxious time.  Let us help you learn how to care for your newborn in the early weeks.  We'll discuss newborn characteristics, behavior & basic care, as well as postpartum recovery for mothers & coping skills.

Breastfeeding Support Group
2 mornings every month; Free
Looking for a little support? This group gives breastfeeding mothers the opportunity to share experiences & concerns & is facilitated by a certified lactation consultant.  You are encouraged to attend during your pregnancy & after your baby is born. 1 & 3rd Wednesdays at the Women's Health Resource Center, 8950 North Kendall Dr, Suite 105, 10-11:30 am

Baby's First Year
Free
This support group is for new mothers of children from birth to age one. The group gives moms an opportunity to share their concerns and information with other parents. Babies are welcome. For more information on Baby's First Year support group, call 786-662-8106.
