Most babies are healthy when they are born, but should your baby need specialized care and observation, he or she will be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at South Miami Hospital. Here, a team of physicians, called neonatologists, and neonatal nurses will care for your baby.

A full range of specialists, including pediatric cardiologists, neurologists, surgeons, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons and infectious disease specialists, are available to the NICU as required by the conditions of our patients. Parents may participate in their infant’s care as much as the baby’s condition allows. Grandparents and other designated visitors may visit the baby in the special nursery with prior arrangements.

South Miami Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a capacity of 23 Level II and 15 Level III neonatal intensive care beds. The unit provides around-the-clock care for babies with a wide variety of medical problems, including extreme prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, perinatal asphyxia, persistent pulmonary hypertension and sepsis.

The Level III NICU, which opened in March 2009, provides care and neonatal surgery to babies weighing less than 2.2 pounds. It has all private rooms that allow individualized and private environments for babies and their families. Special lighting and noise-reduction surfaces combine to create a welcoming environment that promotes healing.

After leaving the hospital, all at-risk NICU patients receive follow-up care at South Miami Hospital’s Child Development Center.
