The Gamma Knife Center at Doctors Hospital is uniquely qualified to treat brain tumors and other neurological conditions. The Gamma Knife is not actually a knife.

It is a device that uses gamma rays to destroy brain tumors (both cancerous and non-cancerous) and treats other conditions including malformed blood vessels and trigeminal neuralgia. This is done without an incision or physical entry into the brain. Because there is no cutting involved, there is no hospital stay and the entire procedure is done in just hours.

Since 1993, the team at Doctors Hospital, located in the heart of historic Coral Gables, has performed more than 5,500, “surgeries” without using a scalpel, making them the most experienced Gamma Knife team in Florida and among the world’s leaders.

Led by neurosurgeon Aizik Wolf, M.D., they use radiosurgery – sophisticated computer software that guides subatomic particles called gamma rays. From 192 different angles, laser-thin gamma rays can target tumors as small as a pea. Individually, the rays cannot damage healthy brain tissue, but when they converge on the specified treatment area they deliver intense radiation to the exact spot that is needed. There’s no need to expose the brain to radiation or to cut into the skull. In fact, there’s not a single blade in the gamma Knife. There are few, if any, side effects.

Earlier this year, Doctors Hospital proudly introduced the latest generation in state of the art Gamma Knife technology, the Leksell Gamma Knife PERFEXION. This innovative system radically broadens the use of stereotactic radiosurgery. We are now able to treat neck/cervical lesions and multiple lesions with greater ease, making treatment sessions faster and more comfortable for the patient.
