Addiction Treatment: Residential Treatment Program

 Residential Treatment Program

In addition to inpatient and outpatient programs, an off-campus, extended care residential program offers patients a safe and secure environment to help break the addictive cycle and allow patients the necessary time to heal.  The residential program is part of a continuum of care for addictive disorders, providing various levels of professional support to match the severity of patients’ addictions.

Patients in the Residential Treatment Program live in cottages in a quiet neighborhood near South Miami Hospital and return to the hospital daily for counseling and therapy. The personalized attention, group support and structured living arrangement enable patients to avoid past addictive behaviors and focus on their recovery. The program helps patients learn to live independently without drugs or alcohol.

The cottages are one and two-bedroom dwellings, all comfortably furnished and equipped with appliances, linens, dishes and utensils.

Patients of the same sex share a cottage and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own cleaning, laundry and personal hygiene. Patients are seen by a staff dietician as needed and given grocery certificates to do their own shopping. Patients participate in a weekly exercise routine, and they have access to the swimming pool at the cottages. Qualified addiction treatment professionals are on the premises 24 hours a day to supervise patients’ activities.

A Step-by-Step Approach to Recovery
The Residential Treatment Program combines intensive therapy and peer support to prepare patients for the next phase in their recovery – living  independently without alcohol or drugs. By living and participating 24 hours a day in the residential program, patients are able to focus exclusively on the treatment process. As they demonstrate more and more responsibility, patients move toward less structured treatment.

Families and employers are invited to become involved in the program to reinforce and support the patient's recovery. Family members are encouraged to attend lectures and group therapy sessions, as well as support groups like Al-Anon (AA), Naranon (NA) and Families Anonymous. Employee assistance program managers are also invited to participate in back-to-work sessions.

Take the next step
Because of the nature of the disease, it is often up to someone other than the addicted person to take the first step toward treatment and recovery. South Miami Hospital's Addiction Treatment Center is the next step.

The Addiction Treatment Center responds quickly to crisis situations with a 24-hour on-call system. If a patient requires a psychological evaluation or hospitalization for detoxification, for example, we can provide these services virtually on the spot.

Our philosophy is based on respect for the dignity, worth and unique needs of each individual. Our message embraces the belief that "you alone can do it, but you cannot do it alone."
