Addiction treatment also involves patients' families. Dealing with a loved one’s addiction is often stressful, frustrating and emotionally painful for family members.
That’s why South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Center also focuses on family. Relationships with the patient may be strained because of the addiction, so we work closely with family members to reestablish their relationships with the patient and to educate them about addiction and recovery. Plus, research shows that recovering from an addiction is a process that has better results when the patient’s loved ones are involved.
Loved ones spend six hours a week on average attending therapy sessions, support groups and educational presentations.
Our family program includes counseling for family members and significant others by our family therapists. Family members and the patient meet weekly with a family therapist to discuss the progress of the patient’s recovery and any problems that may arise during treatment. Often, patients’ families have a clearer picture of their loved one’s progress and can share important information that may be used to treat the patient’s addiction.
Family members also learn from addiction treatment professionals during lectures designed to educate them about addiction and recovery. These weekly lectures cover topics like codependency, family roles in addiction and the diseases of alcoholism and drug addiction.
Family members are encouraged to attend support groups like Al-Anon, Alateen, Naranon and Families Anonymous, some of which meet in the evenings at South Miami Hospital, to learn how other families cope with addiction.
