Addiction Treatment Program at South Miami Hospital
Our Philosophy
We believe that recovery from addiction is an ongoing process. It involves not only freedom from drugs and alcohol, but also the achievement of serenity and a philosophy of life that promotes growth and change within the individual as well as the family. The goal of treatment is to break denial and motivate the patient to want to respond to the therapeutic program. The staff's philosophy of caring is based on respect for the dignity, worth and uniqueness of each individual. Our message embraces the belief that "you alone can do it, but you cannot do it alone."
Treating the Illness of Addiction
Addiction is a chronic, progressive disease with very serious consequences if left untreated. Fortunately, it can be treated, and the cycle of addictive behavior stopped. As with many other kinds of serious illness, professional treatment is necessary to help you recover.
Established in 1976, the Addiction Treatment Program at South Miami Hospital is currently the only hospital-based treatment program in South Florida. We offer a variety of inpatient, outpatient and residential treatment programs aimed at overcoming addictive disorders related to alcohol and substance abuse. Our team of physicians, therapists and psychologists treat adolescents and adults by using an interdisciplinary approach that addresses all aspects of the illness. We also offer a program in Spanish.
South Miami Hospital's Addiction Treatment Program offers a broad range of treatment options, from hospital admission for detoxification to family counseling, psychotherapy and separation from a negative environment. Unlike more limited programs, we can customize treatment by combining different approaches and programs. This not only allows us to choose treatment consistent with the progression of the illness, but also allows flexibility in putting together a treatment regimen. As a hospital-based program, we can treat addiction along with other illnesses at the same time.
We respect our patients’ right of privacy and adhere to federal laws requiring patient confidentiality. We cannot release any information confirming or denying the presence, location or condition of patients without their consent or that of their parents in the case of our adolescent patients.
We are accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), which means we meet or exceed the highest standards of quality and safety by the nation’s leading healthcare accrediting body. In fact in 2003, we received a score of 100, the highest score JCAHO gives.
We accept most forms of insurance. However, we recommend that you check with your insurance company or your employer's Employee Assistance Program for specific coverage information. Patients with insurance coverage, or whose company has a contract with South Miami Hospital’s Addiction Treatment Program, will be responsible for any co-payments or deductibles. All major credit cards are accepted.

Impaired Professional Program
We work closely with professional membership associations who refer chemically dependent physicians, nurses, attorneys, business executives and other professionals to us for treatment. Our therapists will design a treatment program to help these individuals resolve the issues surrounding their addictions and return to their professions.
The Initial Evaluation
Our program begins with a free, confidential evaluation to determine the most effective treatment approach for each patient. Patients speak to an addiction treatment professional about their addiction, personal lives, family support and their treatment expectations. A personalized treatment plan is developed, and patients may be admitted to the hospital.
The initial evaluation takes about two hours to complete and is completely confidential. All information obtained during treatment is covered by the Federal Confidentiality Law that states treatment providers may not give out any information regarding your treatment without your written consent.
