Benefiting the community through excellence in healthcare is built into the basic fabric of Baptist Health. We began as a hospital whose focus was to take care of the sick. Now, our mission encompasses more. We're also about keeping people healthy. Through prevention programs, education and diagnostic services, Baptist Health is more involved in the health and well-being of South Florida than ever before.
Our mission is also faith-based, which means we take care of our less fortunate neighbors. In 2007, we provided $162 million in charitable healthcare. When you add that to money we spend on community health programs, free screenings and support of numerous health-related not-for-profit organizations, we spent nearly $500 million in 2007 bringing quality health services to those in need.
Providing the latest technologies and services to our community means that our hospitals never stop improving. The new Homestead Hospital receives rave reviews from patients and physicians. Mariners Hospital recently opened its Diabetes Care Center – the only such facility in the Keys. South Miami Hospital is the home of the newly renovated and expanded South Miami Heart Center, which includes the Heart Rhythm Center and 24-hour Heart Attack Unit. The new Victor E. Clarke Pavilion at Baptist Hospital houses one of the largest emergency centers in Florida.
Baptist Health is also taking a leadership role by committing to environmentally responsible, energy-efficient design and function of all our facilities. Scheduled to open in 2011, the new West Kendall Baptist Hospital will be one of the first hospitals in the United States to apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
