Helping To Change Life and Save Lives
Philanthropic support plays an essential role at Mariners Hospital. The generosity of our caring donors has tremendous impact on the health and well-being of our community, enabling Mariners to obtain new technology, to provide further training for employees and to acquire much needed equipment.
But much more than physical assets, generous donations have created innumberable opportunities to change and save lives in our community.
Please consider joining our donors and making a gift that can make a difference in someone’s life.
Endowment Fund
Mariners Hospital eICU LifeGuard Endowment Fund
Too often healthcare offers only a promise. But the Mariners Hospital electronic Intensive Care Unit (eICU) LifeGuard System is more than a promise. It is a proven lifesaver -- fulfilling the hopes of patients and their families.
To ensure the eICU will continue to be available for Upper Keys residents, Bob and Barbara Gintel donated $1 million as the lead gift in the Mariners Hospital eICU LifeGuard Endowment Fund.
The Mariners Hospital Foundation invites you to share in the Gintel family’s vision of carrying on the life-saving work of the eICU. Please consider an investment in this important project.
The endowment fund will earn interest and continue to grow in the foundation’s investment pool. Each year income from the fund will partially subsidize the operations of the Mariners Hospital eICU LifeGuard system – helping to eliminate financial concerns associated with annual operating costs.

Capital Projects
Giving our doctors, nurses, technologists and technicians state-of-the-art equipment ensures that we maintain our margin of excellence and continue to provide quality healthcare to our community. A donation to one of Mariners Hospital’s capital projects will enrich the medical fabric of our community.
Mariners Hospital Laboratory Expansion
Mariners Hospital is expanding its laboratory to ensure space for instruments that can deliver improved patient outcomes. The new instruments will be from the same manufacturer as other Baptist Health South Florida hospitals, which means instrument references and methodologies will be the same throughout the hospitals. This feature will enable the Mariners laboratory to call upon our sister hospitals if Mariners equipment should go down. The combination of standardization and back-up will yield faster, more accurate laboratory results, yielding improved patient care. Ongoing Funds
Mariners Hospital maintains three ongoing funds to offer scholarships to employees and community members. Donations to the Mariners Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing, Mariners Hospital Wellness Fund or the William E. Chasteen Scholarship Fund allows us to continue to provide high quality healthcare services to the Upper Keys Community.
Mariners Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing:
The Mariners Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing (CEN) was established to improve the quality of patient care through innovations in nursing care, nursing education and nursing research. Governed by Mariners nurses, a CEN committee decides how to spend funds. Recently, the CEN sent nurses to advanced training in Palliative Care and for certification in specialized emergency department nursing. The CEN has purchased equipment such as a mock code cart, minimal lift equipment and pediatric code carts. To make a gift, contact Wendy Gentes at Mariners Hospital Foundation 305-434-1665, wendyrg@baptisthealth.net
Mariners Hospital Wellness Fund
The Mariners Hospital Wellness Fund was established to support wellness initiatives in our hospital and community. These include Wellness Center scholarships, sports/fitness events, health fairs and screenings, workshops/seminars on health topics and other wellness-related events. When you donate $1,000 or more to the Wellness Fund, a plaque inscribed with your name will be placed on the lobby wall in the Tassell Medical Arts Building. To make a gift, contact Wendy Gentes at Mariners Hospital Foundation 305-434-1665, wendyrg@baptisthealth.net
William E. Chasteen Scholarship Fund
The William E. Chasteen Scholarship Fund was created in 2000 by Upper Keys residents Tom and Dale Chasteen in memory of their father. This scholarship is used to fund continuing professional education and training for Mariners Hospital employees. The Chasteen family continues to match donations to the scholarship fund. Special Events
Through special events, Mariners Hospital is able to raise necessary funds and build awareness of the hospital and its needs. Mariners hosts two signature events each year. We start the year with the Bougainvillea Ball in January and end the year with the Mariners Hospital Gordon Present 5K Walk/Run in December.
Bougainvillea Ball
The Bougainvillea Ball is the premier event in the Florida Keys, and is held each year on the last Saturday in January. Philanthropic support is critical to the success of this event, with individuals and businesses participating through sponsorships and auction donations. Proceeds help Mariners maintain our margin of excellence, while continuing to provide quality healthcare to our community. For information, contact Wendy Gentes, 305-434-1665, wendyrg@baptisthealth.net
Mariners Hospital Gordon Present 5K Walk/Run
Mariners Hospital hosts the popular Mariners Hospital Gordon Present 5K Walk/Run each year. The date for the 2009 event will be posted shortly. The nursing staff at Mariners Hospital, along with community volunteers, organize this event. All proceeds benefit the Mariners Hospital Center for Excellence in Nursing. This past year, your support helped fund three new pediatric crash code carts, critical care nursing certification and diabetes education.
