A Tradition in Caring
Community support for Homestead Hospital is a tradition that began 70 years ago when area residents generously donated two-thirds of the cost to construct the original hospital. Today, Homestead Hospital Foundation raises funds for Homestead Hospital and continues to garner community support to help the hospital fulfill its mission of providing top-quality, compassionate healthcare.

Gifts to Homestead Hospital Foundation can be designated to a specific area of interest or given to our general fund to help where the need is greatest.

Listed below are a few suggestions as to how your gifts might be used.

Diagnostic Testing and Imaging
Digital X-rays and mammograms, and MRI and CT scans are among the advanced technologies used at Homestead Hospital to detect and diagnose disease. A coronary CTA scan is a non-invasive way to detect blockages in the arteries and is widely used to test people who have experienced symptoms related to heart disease or those with risk factors.  Demand is exceeding capacity, and an additional CT scanner is needed. The cost is $1.6 million.

Echocardiographs, non-invasive vascular blood flow studies and stress tests are other diagnostic cardiac tests offered at Homestead Hospital.  Cardiology testing is a critical tool for early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.  The cost of an echocardiogram machine to meet this demand is $250,000

Chest Pain Center
Heart attack is the second leading cause of death in America.  Quick assessment and treatment is the first line of defense against heart attack.  A chest pain center at Homestead Hospital will provide this high level of response to heart attack for the people of south Miami-Dade and the Upper Keys.  The cost to establish a chest pain center at Homestead Hospital and to ensure its first year of operation is $250,000.

The newest technology in the treatment of heart attack patients is to lower body temperature to prevent tissue damage.  Hypothermia units lower the body temperature safely while a heart attack victim is in transit to the hospital and maintains the lower temperature while treatment is administered.  This technology is already in use by Emergency Medical Transport teams in Miami-Dade and can benefit the patients best if the receiving hospital also uses them.  The cost of one hypothermia unit is $40,000.

Magnet Status
Homestead Hospital has begun a two year effort to restructure its nursing operation to a decentralized organizational structure and a shared decision-making management model.  The culmination of this effort is coveted recognition of Homestead Hospital as a Magnet hospital.  The road to Magnet status will be the single most significant pursuit of excellence at Homestead Hospital over the next two years.  Because Magnet recognition is awarded for excellence in nursing services, its benefits extend to patients through improved quality of care.  These benefits directly relate to the cultural transformation associated with obtaining and maintaining Magnet status.  The cost for Homestead Hospital to achieve this standard of excellence is $200,000.
