Giving/Foundation: Baptist Health South Florida Foundation

 Excellence in Healthcare

The Foundation's mission, through volunteer leadership and philanthropic support, is to improve the health and quality of life of all the members of our community.

Our commitment to "excellence in healthcare," through the generosity of our donors, helps to support advances in technology, patient care and education at all our hospitals and facilities.  Each entity has a fundraising arm – together they comprise Baptist Health South Florida Foundation.

A Charitable Gift
The Foundation is committed to helping our donors meet their philanthropic goals.  Together with Foundation staff members, donors have the opportunity to decide what programs and services their gifts support.  Or, they may choose to contribute unrestricted funds to be used for the greatest need.

Here are a few suggestions of how your gift might be used:

Addiction Treatment Program
South Miami Hospital's Addiction Treatment Program has been helping people conquer drug and alcohol dependency since 1976.  The program offers a broad range of treatment options for adults and adolescents in English and Spanish, including detoxification, family counseling, outpatient and residential treatment.  Because recovery from addiction is an ongoing process, we also offer relapse treatment and continuing care programs.  For information, call 786-662-8126.

Helping Kids With Cancer
The chances of curing some forms of childhood cancer are as high as 75 percent. But for the children and families who must endure it - 6,500 more each year - it consumes 100 percent of their lives. Over the past 40 years, doctors have made remarkable strides in childhood cancer care. But there is much more to be done. That is why we need your help. Families with children who are undergoing treatment for cancer are devastated, both emotionally and financially.  The Baptist Health South Florida Foundation has established a fund within Baptist Children's Hospital Regional Cancer Program that helps supports needy families by helping with housing, transportation, access to a child psychologist and additional services that otherwise would not be available.  The fund will be a consistent source of financial, emotional and spiritual aid to children with cancer and their families.

The needs are many and varied. They include developing a specialized inpatient unit for pediatric cancer patients; funding continuing education for our staff; housing families who come from out of town for care; and providing other practical assistance for children and families in the cancer treatment program. Our staff would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about the fund for children with cancer. For more information, please call Stephen Parsons, CFRE, vice president and chief development officer at 786-596-5411, or E-mail stephenp@baptisthealth.net.

New Emergency Center Expansion at Baptist Hospital
Anyone who has needed emergency medical care knows the challenges hospitals face nationwide to treat the rising number of patients in their emergency room — from the desperately ill or injured to the uninsured family with the flu.

Baptist Hospital has done something about this crisis. In the largest expansion in its 46-year history, Baptist has completed the $50 million, four-story Victor E. Clarke Emergency Pavilion, which houses a renovated and expanded Emergency Center.

In 2005, the Baptist Hospital ER, designed for 40,000 patient visits a year, treated double that number or nearly 200 patients each day.  The new Emergency Center has 100 exam rooms, including six state-of-the-art trauma rooms. A separate Children’s Emergency Center, with its own reception area, will have 20 of the exam rooms and two of the trauma rooms. Also included in the 654,000-square-foot, $122 million East Campus expansion are 96 inpatient beds, a new imaging center, laboratory and pharmacy and a seven-story parking garage, all in addition to the expanded Emergency Center.

Our community and Baptist Hospital now turn to those who have the ability and resources to make great things possible.  The Emergency Center Expansion Project has a variety of naming opportunities still available to individuals and families that will establish a permanent legacy in South Florida for generations.  Help us change lives and save lives.

For more information, please call Stephen Parsons, CFRE, vice president and chief development officer at 786-596-5411, or e-mail stephenp@baptisthealth.net.

Cancer Treatment with Tomotherapy – South Miami Hospital
South Miami Hospital is one of a handful of hospitals in the nation now able to treat cancer patients with a new generation of radiation therapy called tomotherapy. This technology gives doctors the ability to treat cancer with much greater precision by combining the accuracy of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) with the image-guided benefits of a built-in CT scanner. During treatment, thousands of pencil-thin beams of radiation are delivered onto the exact shape of the tumor from every direction, minimizing damage to the surrounding tissue. The state-of-the-art machine can be used for a variety of cancers including prostate, breast, lung, brain, head and neck, bone and soft tissue, lymphomas and multiple myeloma. For more information, call Karl Cetta at South Miami Hospital Foundation at 786-662-8206, or e-mail karlc@baptisthealth.net.
