Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer

The da Vinci Robotic System is best known for its success in treating localized prostate cancer.  Radical prostatectomy – removing the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue – is the standard treatment for localized prostate cancer and robotic surgery has been shown to offer a variety of benefits to patients.

The da Vinci robot makes operating on the sensitive anatomy of the urologic system easier and more precise. The magnified view it provides gives the surgeon a clear picture of the anatomy surrounding the prostate gland, helping to preserve and protect the delicate nerves.

Clinical studies have revealed the benefits of robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer:

• Excellent cancer control.
• An average hospital stay of less than two days.
• Less blood loss and fewer transfusions.
• Less pain and less risk of infection.
• Quicker return of urinary continence and sexual function.
