The ability to "see" inside the body using various imaging techniques is a necessary component of diagnosis and treatment of injury and illness. The Imaging Services Department at South Miami Hospital offers a wide range of testing, from X-ray, computerized tomography (CT) scan and ultrasound to nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Our nuclear medicine area provides stress thallium testing, which can include nuclear SPECT imaging for cardiovascular disease. SPECT imaging gives a three-dimensional image and provides more detail about the organ or bone being scanned.
We have two 1.5 Tesla MRI machines, both with a wide opening and a stereo sound system, to help our patients feel as comfortable as possible. This equipment gives us the ability to provide a wide range of orthopedic, neurological and cardiovascular procedures.
Bone density tests for osteoporosis, also known as Dual energy X-ray Absorption testing or DEXA, uses low-dose X-ray to measure bone density in the spine, hips and forearms. The test takes about 10 minutes, and the results determine whether a person is developing osteoporosis, which can lead to painful bone fractures.
Our mammography services offer our patients low-dose quality testing by skilled and caring staff. Our mammography services are accredited by the American College of Radiology.
