Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute combines the unique advantages of a patient-friendly community hospital with the cutting-edge clinical research of a leading academic medical center.
Most of our cardiovascular research focuses on new, less-invasive tests and treatments that offer life-saving cures without the trauma of surgery. What does that mean for you?
-
More than 20 current studies of new, less-invasive devices and procedures.

The Institute also provides to patients special treatment devices to benefit those that are diagnosed with a condition or disease affecting fewer then 4,000 individuals per year such as cerebral aneurysms.
-
First-in-U.S. access to new technology years before other South Florida hospitals.
-
Physicians who’ve been national leaders in developing the test or treatment you’ll be receiving.
-
A broader array of options to achieve your own best outcome.
Access to research has always been a major component of first-class patient care. That’s because there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all disease. Every patient has a unique anatomy, background and needs. When you and your physician have access to leading-edge research, you have a broader array of options to help you achieve your own best results.
In some cases, access to a research device and a physician team with experience using it can mean a less invasive, catheter-based procedure versus traditional open surgery. For years, patients have traveled to the Institute from around the region to receive stent-grafts for aortic aneurysms and dissections that no one else could treat non-surgically.
Here are just a few other areas in which the Institute’s pioneering research has provided the medical edge that patients need by participating in:
-
First national clinical trial of a stent-graft for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
-
First national clinical trial of a stent to prevent stroke from blocked carotid arteries.
-
First U.S. study proving the effectiveness of a leg stent.
-
National clinical trials of new drug-eluting coronary stents.
-
First national long-term studies of embolization therapy for uterine fibroids.
-
First U.S. study of a microchip pressure sensor for AAA.
-
Studies of high-speed cardiac CT and MRI imaging for ER chest-pain patients.
-
First national studies of catheter-based closure of PFO and left-atrial appendage to prevent stroke.
-
National studies of catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmias.
Capabilities the Institute develops from clinical trials enrich the entire medical environment, imparting the spirit of innovation and the skills that lead to new areas of clinical strength. Multiple clinical trials have helped make the Institute a regional leader in:
-
Repairing abdominal aneurysms with short or angulated “necks” that normally would require surgery.
-
Repairing traumatic injury and aneurysms of the thoracic aorta.
-
Successfully treating chronic total occlusions of the coronary arteries without surgery.
-
Microchip pressure sensors for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
The Institute also has built on its experience base from past trials to take on related, new research involving:
Patient Protections
All clinical trials at the Institute must go through a rigorous review by the Baptist Health South Florida Institutional Review Board (IRB):
-
Members of this diverse group assume responsibility for the safety and protection of all patients participating in research studies.
-
Members of the IRB and our medical and research staff are all certified in Human Subjects Protection.
Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute has a dedicated research department that coordinates all clinical trials and works directly with each patient who is enrolled in a study by an Institute physician.
Once a patient enrolls in a study at the Institute, these research coordinators:
-
Work one-on-one with the patient to ensure that their care is delivered at the highest level throughout study participation.
-
Provide patients who are considering a research study with resource materials about the study specifically and about research in general.
-
Make themselves available to answer questions and explain any aspect of the study.
