We have a long history of caring for children. When Baptist Hospital opened in 1960, the second patient was a child who needed surgery for a badly broken arm. From that day on, Baptist made a commitment to the health of children in our community. In 1997, Baptist Children’s Hospital was officially “born.” The opening celebrated the growth of pediatric services from the basic care that was available in 1960 to the extremely specialized care offered today. And in patient surveys, parents say the quality of care at Baptist Children’s Hospital is excellent.
A look inside Baptist Children’s Hospital Baptist Children’s Hospital comprises numerous services — both inpatient and outpatient — for children. Among the pediatric facilities are the:
48-bed Children and Adolescents Pavilion
16-bed Children’s Emergency Center, open 24 hours a day
8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
14-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
12-bed Level II Neonatal Nursery
Specialty outpatient clinics, including oncology
Neonatal Transport Team
Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Treatment programs.
The Martha Ware Rehabilitation Center Baptist Children’s Hospital has opened its new outpatient pediatric rehabilitation center at 9035 Sunset Drive. The Martha Ware Rehabilitation Center replaces the hospital’s smaller on-campus facility, providing easier access to patients, and plenty of free parking.
The outpatient center is staffed with the same physical, occupational and speech therapists who have been providing these services for years at Baptist Children’s Hospital.
The 5,000 square-foot center is considerably larger than the rehabilitation center that had been located on the hospital campus, and it sports a kid-friendly park décor. Click here for more information on the outpatient center.

Children’s Emergency Center The Children’s Emergency Center is open 24 hours a day, every day. Physicians who specialize in both pediatrics and emergency medicine work alongside pediatric-trained nurses and technicians. Their priority is to care for children suffering from minor ailments to severe injuries and life-threatening illnesses. The Children’s Emergency Center is separate from the adult ER, and features specialized equipment just for children in a child-friendly setting designed to comfort.
Care that begins at birth — and sometimes before The Family Birth Place provides the utmost in care, comfort and convenience for parents and the more than 4,000 babies who are born here each year. Sometimes a mother has a difficult pregnancy, with complications that threaten her life or that of her baby. Obstetricians with special training are available to care for these mothers, and occasionally a baby receives care while still in the womb. Babies who are born prematurely or are seriously ill receive the special care required in the Level II and III George Batchelor and Gloria Vasta Lewis Neonatal Intensive Care Units, staffed by neonatologists (physicians with special training in the care of newborns and infants with complicated health problems) and highly trained nurses, respiratory therapists and clinicians.
Pediatric Intensive Care A child with severe injuries or a life-threatening illness needs the exceptional care that can be provided only in an intensive care setting. The eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has the most advanced equipment and resources available, and medical specialists and nurses who provide close personal attention to patients and families.
Children and Adolescents Pavilion Children hospitalized in the 48-bed Children and Adolescents Pavilion are given tender loving care by the pediatric staff. Parents are encouraged to stay with their children and take part in their care as much as possible. And of course Mom or Dad may spend the night.
Surgery at Baptist Children’s Hospital In an independent survey, area physicians selected Baptist Children’s Hospital as one of South Florida’s “most desirable” children’s hospitals for pediatric surgery. Our staff is experienced in handling the physical and emotional needs of children and families, and highly skilled pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists provide outstanding expertise.
Child life specialists Adjusting to the hospital experience can be difficult for both the child and family. In both the Emergency Center and the Children and Adolescents Pavilion, our child life specialists help ease the stress of the hospital experience with reading material and toys designed for play therapy.
Special care for special kids Children who have cancer, diabetes, cystic fibrosis or other chronic or life-threatening diseases need special care.
