In addition to the four major types of treatment, our arsenal of weapons in the war against cancer includes:
Interventional Radiology. Some cancers can be helped by highly specialized, non-surgical techniques performed at our hospitals. Physicians insert a thin tube, or catheter, through the skin or thread it through blood vessels to the tumor. Extreme heat, chemotherapy drugs or other therapies are delivered through the catheter to destroy cancer. Examples are radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of cancers of the liver, kidney, lung bone or other tissue and chemoembolizaton of liver cancer.
Complementary therapies. Meditation. Guided imagery. Stress reduction. Journal writing. Massage. Music, art and movement therapy. *Tai chi-style exercise and Yoga-style exercise. Nutritional counseling. These and other mind/body therapies are available to patients. For information about these offerings, call South Miami Hospital Behavioral and Collaborative Medicine Program at 786-662-8106. *Classes focus on movement instruction, rather than religious aspects of yoga and tai chi.
Genetic Risk Education Service. For those concerned about their risk for developing cancer, particularly if they have a personal or family history of the disease. Our specially trained nurse offers free individualized genetic education to those at increased risk for hereditary breast, ovarian, colorectal, endometrial cancer or melanoma. Genetic testing, if ordered by the physician, is also available for a fee, which may be covered by insurance. For information or appointments, call the Genetic Risk Education Service at 786-662-4761.
Pain Management. We know more about combating pain than ever before. Our specially trained nurses are invaluable resources to patients and colleagues alike. Physicians knowledgeable in pain treatment work with the cancer team as well.
Palliative Care is the comprehensive management of the physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of persons with acute or chronic life-threatening illness. Specialized care is overseen by our Palliative Care Coordinators who work with staff caring for end-of-life patients. Their goal is to prevent and relieve suffering and support the best possible quality of life for patients and their families, regardless of the stage of disease or the need for other therapies.
