Helping to Change Lives and Save Lives
- Philanthropic support plays an essential role at South Miami Hospital. The generosity of our caring donors has tremendous impact on the health and well-being of our community, enabling South Miami Hospital to obtain new technology, to provide further training for employees and to acquire much needed equipment. But more than physical assets, generous donations have created innumberable opportunities to change and save lives in our community.
Please consider donating to one of the fundraising projects or special events listed below and make a difference in someone’s life:
South Miami Heart Center
South Miami Heart Center takes a comprehensive approach toward the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Our physicians and staff are committed to providing the highest standards in patient care and customer service. In addition to preventative, diagnostic and treatment, we also offer cardiac rehabilitation services and education for our patients and the community.
Center for Robotic Surgery at South Miami Hospital

Surgeons at South Miami Hospital operate with extra arms – from a robot. The da Vinci robot, named after Leonardo da Vinci, inventor of the first robot (a mechanical knight rigged with cables and pulleys), enables surgeons to merge the best of traditional open surgery with the tools of minimally invasive surgery. Patients experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times and less blood loss.
Until recently, minimally invasive surgery was not widely used for extremely delicate or complex surgeries because the equipment designed to operate through small incisions included stiff instruments that resembled knitting needles or chopsticks. Those surgical tools – ideal for some procedures – lacked the flexibility and control of the human wrist. But the da Vinci technology includes instruments that move and rotate with the flexibility and range of a human wrist and can carry out complex procedures without making large openings in the body.
Less pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times and less blood loss translates to better surgical experiences and outcomes for our patients – a monumental achievement through robotic surgery.
Baptist Health Foundation is fundraising for the Center for Robotic Surgery at South Miami Hospital to cover the cost of an additional da Vinci robot, which is in excess of $2 million. Cancer Treatment with Tomotherapy - South Miami Hospital
The Tomotherapy Hi-Art System is the most advanced cancer radiation treatment available, delivering precise radiation to tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. It is the only radiation system with an on-board CT scanner.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - South Miami Hospital
We will soon be expanding out Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This year, over 4,000 babies were born at South Miami Hospital and the NICU staff cared for about 500 of those infants. Although the staff is trained to provide care for all newborns, those weighing less than two pounds (Level III) were transferred to nearby hospitals that were designated to provide that level of care. Currently a Level II facility, South Miami Hospital plans to expand the facility and create a Level III NICU, allowing us to provide care for all babies born here, regardless of their birth weight. To do this, the hospital will need to build a nursery that can accommodate 15 additional beds.
Child Development Center - South Miami Hospital
The Child Development Center at South Miami Hospital provides multidisciplinary diagnostic evaluations and treatment to premature infants born with complications, and to children who have, or are at high risk for, developmental disabilities and delays.
Center for Excellence in Nursing - Baptist Health South Florida
The Center for Excellence in Nursing encompasses all Baptist Health hospitals and facilities. Donations help educate, train and develop the nursing staff, support nursing scholarships and improve patient care with nurse approved equipment and programs.
Addiction Treatment Program
Established in 1976, the Addiction Treatment Program at South Miami Hospital is currently the only hospital-based treatment program in South Florida. We offer a variety of inpatient, outpatient and residential treatment programs aimed at overcoming addictive disorders related to alcohol and substance abuse. Our team of physicians, therapists and psychologists treat adolescents and adults by using an interdisciplinary approach that addresses all aspects of the illness. We also offer a program in Spanish.
South Miami Hospital Emergency Center Expansion
An improved emergency center, surgical suite and imaging area streamlined for the 21st century, featuring swift, high-tech care and state-of-the-art technology, is being planned at South Miami Hospital. Design on the $100 million hospital expansion began in the summer of 2008, with a projected opening within the next four years.
