Navigating the Teenage Years

Has your chatty child turned into a teenager who won’t talk to you?  Is your daughter hanging around with a new crowd? What if you suspect your son may be using drugs or alcohol? 

Come to the next community parenting program, “Navigating the Teenage Years,” Thursday, April 23, 7-9 p.m., in the auditorium at Baptist Children’s Hospital, 8900 N. Kendall Drive. 

Peggy B. Sapp, President & CEO of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, will help parents understand the changes taking place in their teenagers’ bodies and brains, and how to help them handle new freedoms and temptations.

The event, sponsored by South Miami Hospital's Center for Women & Infants, kicks off at 1 p.m. with a talk from our keynote speaker, actress/comedienne Victoria Labalme, who will help you laugh through your busy, crazy life. Watch renowned interventional radiologist Barry Katzen, M.D., medical director of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, and vascular surgeon Ignacio Rua, M.D., medical director of vascular surgery, as they repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm, Thursday, May 7, at 4 p.m.
 
 

 

Baptist Children’s Hospital to Perform Corrective Facial Surgeries for South Florida Children – Free Of Charge

A child’s smile is one of the greatest joys of life. nfortunately, one in 800 children in the United States is born with a facial deformity.

For the eighth year, Baptist Children’s Hospital will donate its facilities and charitable funds to perform corrective facial surgeries and other clinically needed reconstructive procedures for South Florida children.
 
These operations will be provided at no cost for children whose families are unable to pay for these types of services.
 
A screening to identify children who may be candidates for surgery will take place on Saturday, May 30, at Baptist Children’s Hospital. The surgeries will take place on Saturday, June 20.
 
Types of facial deformities that can be corrected include: cleft palates, cleft lips, scars, tumors, burns, port wine birthmarks and congenital hand deformities.
 
Baptist Children’s Hospital doctors from various specialties, including plastic surgery, dentistry and anesthesiology, will also donate their time and expertise for this cause.
 
To be eligible, patients must meet certain surgical and financial criteria. Patients must be 18 years old or younger and residents of Miami-Dade County or Monroe County. They must also present documentation substantiating their parents’ or guardian’s previous 12 months gross income.
 
A financial screening must take place before the clinical screening on May 30. To make an appointment for the financial screening, call Baptist Children’s Hospital at 786-596-3673.
